I give the newer bands like Dimmu credit for creating some kick ass material, but the overall feeling of the under underground bands can't ever be matched and I think that's where a good portion of the confliction lies. lays. MMMmmm. Potato chips.

Sound quality on youtube sometimes sucks the fatty. I really like all of Immortal's first albums apart from Sons of Northern Darkness. But I don't like Battles in the North much i'm afraid. I think i'm the only one. Pure Holocaust, Blizzard Beasts and Damned in black are my personal favs.
I prefer older BM. I've probably explained why thousands of times. Thee Amokste, i agree with your list!
As much as some people hate them, Weakling's full length i think is one of the best albums. It took me shitloads of listens to 'get'. I hated for a year or 2.

i just listened to immortal for the first time on one of their video's on youtube. instruments are standard decent black metal stuff, but the vocals are pure cheese. it's like the dude from dimmu, but he sounds like a gremlin from the neverending story. as far as i'm concerned with "true" black metal, Emperor slays them all.

Amok's two cents:
Trying to compare bands as to who is who and who came from what is a near impossibility within the metal scene. The black metal explosion happened to coddamn fast in the early/middle 90's it's hard to say. However, given the current underground black metal stance, I'd venture to say it has almost nothing to do with Darkthrone--a boring as hell death metal band turned punkish black, and everything to do with the 2nd generation black before the tidal wave--Immortal's first, Emperor's first, etc, yet with a creative and haunting flare none of those bands had. The bands of today do the most with the least, even more than back then, and that is something I've always been drawn to. There are times I'd gladly take a rough documentary film over slick Hollywood crap. There's more heart, energy and emotion in there. Bands of today that would have been ahead of their time back then and almost seem ahead of their time today:
Xasthur ( sheer vocal terror and scary melodies ) Deathspell Omega ( epic as hell ) Typhus ( for melody ) Drudkh ( beauty meets doom meets black ) Stargazer ( top notch musicianship marries graveyard black ) Horna ( replace all Darkthrone with their releases and ye shall be saved )
Then again, I could be dumb.
Nah, i would say your right on the money. You can never forget the bands of the past obviously but you also cant get stuck there. Times change and so does the music platform for which these bands are a part of. Dimmu once stated they were trying to do something different than what their influences were doing. They take a lot of heat for it but i can guarantee you that Dimmu listen to the same stuff that diehard BM fans do. I mean, would it really be that great if bands of today spent all that time copying each other?

dude, i know about songwriting. and i know that alot of black metal is more than that, but the vast majority isn't. listen to a darkthrone song and tell me that it's more than just a pile of riffs. burzum comes from songwriting, atmospheric stuff does, but a lot of it is just thrash with shitty recording.

1. when i think of death, i think of dudes in black tshirts screaming about skullfucking an infant 2. when i think of black, i think of either really shitty sounding recordings of 3 chords. basically, a more leatherclad punk. either that or i think of something supposed to be evil. cradle of filth is supposed to be "evil" or whatever, and i think it's entertaining.
now... I'm not "true" or whatever... but I've been listining to some black metal lately... and it's so much more than that. Who cares what the recording sounds like? or how well they can play their instruments? it's about the song writting... they make the music from the heart... stuff that corporate bands like trivium can never do.

Still doesnt answer my questions.
and noobs, in my book no i dont reguard that album to be a "classic" for BM. Infact most people would tell you they reguard "For All Tid" as a great bm classic instead of any CoF album. I dont.
